THE INSPECTOR GENERAL
Roderick Fillinger was appointed as the Inspector General for the Denali Commission on January 19, 2020. In his role as the IG, he sets the strategic direction and plans the oversight work of the office. As the Commission’s Inspector General, he fosters trust and confidence in the operations of the Commission, strengthening the Commission’s ability to enter partnership opportunities with federal, state, and local governments and corporations, non-profit organizations, and the Alaskan Federation of Natives and the 229 federally recognized tribes, 141 village corporations, 12 regional corporations, and 12 regional nonprofit and tribal consortiums that contract and compact to run federal and state programs that it represents. By providing oversight into and transparency of Commission activities, the OIG supports this mission.
Mr. Fillinger has over 24 years of experience in the IG community. Prior to his appointment to the position of Inspector General, he served as the Deputy Inspector General and Counsel to the IG at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he provided guidance in audits and investigations of the programs and operations of the SEC. Prior to joining the SEC OIG, he served as the General Counsel and Deputy Special Inspector General for Legal and External Affairs at the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP), where he oversaw the provision of legal services as well as Communications and Legislative Affairs. In this role he provided legal guidance to the audit and investigation offices as they reviewed fraud, systemic weaknesses, and internal control failures in financial institutions who received TARP funds. Before his tenure at SIGTARP, he was the Chief Counsel to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) overseeing the programs and operations of the Internal Revenue Service.
Mr. Fillinger is the former chair of the Council of Counsels to the Inspectors General (CCIG), where he led over 300 inspector general attorneys from across the government on legal and strategic matters of mutual concern. He is the recipient of various CCIG awards and serves on several CIGIE committees and working groups that address OIG community wide initiatives. He currently serves as an instructor for the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency Training Institute. He began his public service career through the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Office of Chief Counsel’s honors program. He has litigated on behalf of the IRS in the United States Tax Court and served as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of Ohio.
Mr. Fillinger received his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the University of Cincinnati and his juris doctor from the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He has been certified by OPM as a member of the senior executive service. He is a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Who We Are
The Denali Commission Act, as amended and the Inspector General Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-452), as amended require the Denali Commission to have an Inspector General. The act requires the Inspector General to independently and objectively:
- Conduct audits and investigations of the Denali Commission programs and operations;
- Work with the Denali management team for activities designed to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness or that prevent and detect fraud and abuse in programs and operations; and
- Report OIG activities to the Authority and the U.S. Congress semiannually as of March 31 and September 30 each year
What We Do
The OIG’s mission is to provide independent oversight by conducting audits, investgations and other reviews of the programs and operations of the Denali Commission.
We carry out our mission by:
- conducting independent audits and reviews of Denali Commission programs and operations, the security of information technology, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and the accuracy of financial reports; and
- investigating allegations of fraud and abuse.
